Spot the Heat - NOAA UHI Heat Mapping Campaign
Did you know that Salt Lake City, Miami and Louisville are reported as the top three urban heat island cities in the U.S.? Come join us for a heat mapping project for Salt Lake City.
Utah State University is seeking volunteers for a one-day heat mapping campaign. Volunteers will help collect environmental data about the hottest and coolest places in our region during the summer heat wave. Data collected by volunteers will be used to develop heat index maps of Salt Lake City (see Seattle example) and help address heat-related vulnerabilities across the region. Participating volunteers will be granted a stipend of $25 as a gift card for completion of their responsibilities.
What will volunteers do? Volunteers are needed to be drivers, navigators, and supporters. Drivers will drive along predetermined routes in Salt Lake City over three separate one-hour periods during a hot day. Volunteers will use a simple data-collection device attached to the vehicle. Navigators will help direct drivers' turns along their route.
Are there any requirements to volunteer? All volunteers will need to attend a one-hour Volunteer Training Session, complete a short knowledge quiz, and sign a liability waiver. Based on previous campaigns, volunteers will spend a total of about 4 to 6 hours, though the majority of time (~3.5 hours) will occur on the selected campaign day. Drivers will need a valid driver's license, auto insurance, and access to a vehicle.
When will the heat mapping campaign occur? We have scheduled the training session at 6-8 pm 11th July (Tuesday) at Glendale Branch Library, Salt Lake City (Address: 1375 South Concord, Salt Lake City, UT 84104). We are targeting 15th July for the campaign date and 29th July as the secondary campaign date.
What are the next steps? We need to assemble an "on-call" roster of volunteers to account for the fact that summer is such a busy time. We will stay in touch with this list and keep them informed about the project. We will confirm your participation about one week prior to the campaign once we finalize the date.
